Debt negotiation or debt settlement services are those that claim to help you in settling and paying off your debts when you are facing financial crisis. However, before you go to any particular debt settlement company for help, you should check with the authenticity and the reliability of the company. There are many people who have got scammed by the debt negotiation services.
Settlement services and their help
The debt negotiation services are available with the debt settlement companies and also with the credit counseling agencies. When you go to them for help, they first analyze the whole financial situation and your debt mess. They ask you to maintain a trust account or your own savings account so that you are able to make on-time monthly on the debts after the settlement company is able to settle it with your creditors.
The settlement company then negotiates with your lenders and lowers the outstanding debt amount as owed by you on that credit card or unsecured loan. You are required to make the payments as per the settled amount. You are required to make the payments to the settlement company and they are then supposed to disburse the money amongst your creditors.
However, here is where you can get scammed. The settlement company may not even forward the money to your creditors and keep it with themselves. You will never be able to know about this if you don’t keep a track of the money and check your credit report. This is one of the most common scams done by the debt negotiation services.
In such a situation, your financial situation worsens all the more as your debt amounts increase in leaps and bounds. Moreover, the creditors can even sue you for the non-payment of the due even after settlement. Not only will the missed payments get listed on your credit report but also the judgment will get listed. This is going to have added negative effects on your score.
Moreover, you should also know that debt negotiation or debt settlement hurts your credit score as you will have to miss payments before you are actually able to settle your debts. The creditors may not agree to settle your bills till you miss payments as they won’t believe that you are facing financial hardship if you don’t miss payments.
So, before going to take help of the debt negotiation services make sure that you check with their authenticity and if they are accredited with the Better Business Bureau or the BBB. You can also check with your State’s Attorney General’s webpage if there are any complaints against them. In addition, also check if the debt negotiation services company abides by the rules set by the FTC or the Federal Trade Commission.
